Journey was shot this afternoon

It appears superficial though it did penetrate.  Looks like a high powered pellet gun or something.  Called the vet and they told me how to flush it, and I'll see about them looking at her tomorrow.  Called the sherriff's office and am waiting for a call back.  I'm just seriously upset, and I feel so helpless to protect her from someone that would do that.  I found a mark on her last week not as bad, and was kind of suspicious then, but today there is just no doubt, same injury only it penetrated.  I bet I'll have to have it dug out of her tomorrow.  The shot was right behind her right elbow.

  1. Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this. Its one of my worst fears--that a horse will get shot by accident. Are you thinking it was on purpose? That is awful.

  2. Holy Hell!!! *^%$#@!%!! Who in their right mind would use a horse for target practice?!
    Poor Journey! Poor you!
I hope the idiots are caught asap!

  3. The sheriff's office sent a deputy out. He took photographs of the wound that is still oozing blood 3 hours later. It is small but very swollen. I'm going to call my boss in the morning and take a half day so I can arrange a vet visit. The deputy said if the vet digs out a pellet they want it. Journey doesn't seem any worse for wear tonight but I bet it hurts, it would have to. I don't know what makes people so darned mean.

  4. OMG! I almost had a heart attack when I read the title of the post before I saw the blog, so glad she is okay! But horrible that it happened--who does something like that?!

  5. My biggest concern is I don't know how I can protect her or the other two horses.

  6. Geeze, some friggin' moron is really off their rocker if they're taking potshots at your horse.

I'm sorry to hear it happened.

Maybe you ought to arrange a vigilante brigade. I'd come volunteer, and I've never handled a firearm in my life, so when the dbag who did this tries again .. *cough* it might not be pretty.

  7. I'm so glad she's going to be okay. Geez. That's just awful. My old horse had a big scar from being hit by a bolt from a crossbow. It happened before I owned him, but I was told that it nearly killed him. So it's always been a big worry for me too at this time of year.

  8. Oh man, I am so sorry!!! That is absolutely awful, I can't imagine someone so demented. Is there any way you could set up a camera? Or get a really mean dog? I honestly don't know what I'd do if I caught someone intentionally shooting one of my horses. Sending good thoughts your way from Wa.

  9. Other than it looking nasty she seems fine this morning. I'll talk to the vet today and let them decide if she needs seen, or what I need to do. It is in the girth area so if there is a pellet caught in the there that could be a problem for her.

  10. At the new stable I work at, my boss and I found a poacher stand in the trails where people ride all the time. We had it taken down and destroyed and tons of no hunting signs put up through the whole area.

I've read about it happening a lot, and always have been scared that it might happen to Siaga, being bay, that they might mistake him for a deer, and I never wanted to think that people might do it on purpose instead of accident. Journey is obviously colored nothing at all like a deer, no mistaking that.

    I hope you catch them.

  11. On closer examination this morning I think the girth will miss it. It is about a one-inch diameter knot this morning and the oozing has stopped, and the little hole is pretty well trying to scab over. I'll talk to one of the vets today to see if we should dig for the pellet, or just leave it be.

  12. Jacke, Oh, I am so sorry to hear this! Poor Journey! Who could possible do this to your precious horse? I hope the sheriff can help find them. What a horrible thing! Do you have any dogs on your farm? I wonder if that would be some protection.
