Holy Cow!

We went out for an hour of moderate speed hillwork tonight.  The way out there is by riding our fenceline on the neighbor's side (hay field) and then making a right into our woods.  Recently the neighbor has added cattle to his little ten acre farm, which also includes chickens, guinea, and horses.  One of the bovine I believe is a bull.  A very massive black angus looking thing.  Usually it is standing at the back corner where we make the right hand into the woods.  Tonight there was a good sized calf out there, but no bull.  I noticed motion through the brush across our neighbor's fence.  So did Phebes.  I could feel the adrenaline hit her...so I'm thinking, okay, get the right rein in case she spins left, and point her to the woods.  About this time I hear CLANG, CLANG (pause) CLANG.  The bull is inside of a round pen out there, he is coming our way and bringing the freaking round pen WITH HIM!  Crap!  This is bad.  I jerk her head around pointed to the woods so she can hear, but not see.  She's pretty high headed but she's going.  Our training ride was uneventful.  I'm happy to be alive.  ~E.G.

  1. EG, That is unbelievable! Am so glad that you thought of what to do quickly and that Phebes didn't panic. Wow.

  2. That sounds utterly terrifying, a bull bring a round pen with him. Bet that was fun to convince Phebes it wasn't out to eat her.
