The winds of March...

The wind really kicked up yesterday and I did not recognize my horse when I got home from work. She was this wild, rearing, having a fit maniac out in the paddock. The wind had grabbed onto the caution tape and it was flapping up in the round pen. Phebes was beside herself. In all of her running around she managed to somehow slice herself on something, and she was bleeding around the coronet band of her right rear hoof. I've not had trouble catching Phebes for a long time, but it took me a good fifteen minutes to walk her down, and then only because she was thirsty. Brought her out and hosed her leg and hoof down, checked the cut which was a nasty little slice, but fairly superficial. Used an iodine wash to disenfect and applied antibiotic. By this time the bleeding had stopped, and she had no gait abnormality. I took her into the round pen to confront the scary yellow tape. That took about fifteen minutes and once she settled down we just worked on walk, trot, canter, whoa, and reversal of direction on the longe line as I'd run out of day. I'll check her out again tonight, and if I have time.....maybe I'll get to ride. So frustrating! ~E.G.
