Endurance News!

I got my copy today and I was SO EXCITED to see that there are excellent horse welfare rule changes being proposed for the BOD's consideration.  Half hour to pulse down vs. the current hour, lower pulse criteria at the checks, better controls for newbies in the sport, vet to horse ratio, to name a few.  I also like the idea of newbie rides being non-racing, having pre-departure vet checks, especially for a horse that might have had an "iffy" last check, and BODY SCORE, SCORE!!!  No more scrawny looking equine athletes.  Possible mandatory rest periods for injured equines, and sanctioning of rides/owners whose behavior is deemed responsible for an equine death.   All of these things can only benefit our horses, our sport, and our sport's reputation.

Many people abhor change, but if it is to the benefit of our equine partners, I'm on board.   The funny thing about "rules" is that we all abide by them, so the playing field remains even regardless of the change.  In the current climate of negative opinion and the possibility of being lumped in with the FEI (in the middle east) I feel it is good that the AERC looks towards setting the standard of good animal stewardship, animal welfare, and transparency.

Again, if you are in support of these type of changes it is extremely important to write your regional board of directors and make your feelings known.  It is the only way that we can influence change.
