Beet Pulp: Busting the Myths

Check out the scoop on beet pulp at The Daily Feed for Horses.

We depend on beet pulp at our barn to:

  • Add fiber to the feed ration.
  • Increase water in the gut.
  • To get supplements/ medication hidden and consumed.
There are a lot of misconceptions and down right false assumption concerning beet pulp as feed for horses.  The article above addresses and busts some of those myths.

We use it:

In their morning mash daily.
At competitions to maximize fluid intake.
Mixed in their dry feed to add crunchy low calorie volume to the bucket.

For a slightly opposing view about beet pulp  see Natural Horse Magazine.

I'd have to say that the endurance horse has been a test subject and it seems to be working out okay.

  1. I've fed beet pulp to our horses for many years now - and love all the pluses. I firmly believe it helps avoid colic because of all the times we have to change feeds - or the way we feed - such as when we travel with them, or abrupt weather changes, getting enough moisture into them, etc. I even had vets tell me it helps them absorb more protein from their hay and it gives them energy without the grain high. The good endurance riders can't all be wrong! Loved the squirrel story.
