The image below is an illustration of the concept don't hurry...don't tarry...about an hour workout, a bit of walking, the rest five-minute trots on an oval in the arena in one direction, then the other. Look at the duration of the walking and finally look at our average speed --- to slow to complete (or get slightly lost). The point is you really need to take advantage of the flats, and move out well when you can, so that when you have to walk the horse, it doesn't destroy your average speed. Those that ride pokey butt horses like mine have to really watch this!
